Eye Concerns
Fusarium Keratitis
What is Fusarium Keratitis?
Fusarium is a fungus commonly found throughout our everyday environment,
including our skin. It especially thrives in tropical climates. Fusarium
typically enters the eye through some sort of trauma or injury to the cornea,
resulting in an inflammatory reaction.
(Kerititis is an inflammation of the cornea of the eye).
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms of a Fusarium infection include redness, pain, tearing, increased light sensitivity, blurry vision, discharge and swelling. If you experience any of these symptoms, remove your contact lenses immediately and consult your eye care professional.
Can this be treated?
The situation can be treated with combinations of anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory medications. The infection is serious, and the earlier treatment is started, the better the results will be.
